I'd strongly suggest that you look at the work of Shayer and Adey for chemistry, physics and biology Their colleagues Gouge et al work in the Arts :

Curriculum materials for Cognitive Acceleration

The Letıs Think! series (nferNelson) is a unique range of activity based teaching programmes designed to help teachers develop the thinking skills of pupils aged four to nine.
