Fair enough, Michael,?you have a preference for mathematical metaphors.?With a view towards making a point about Piagetian theory, I would ask you:?What drives this preference??Perhaps it is not simply that mathematical models have proved empirically useful.?Perhaps it is partly that you have a sense of the logical validity internal to the model-- a feeling of logical necessity. At any rate Piaget believed that it it is crucial to our reasoning that we develop a feeling of logical necessity-- an internal experience of the logical validity (or lack thereof) of an argument.?He sought to show the development of this inner experience from more rudimentary forms to more advanced forms,?using both theory and data.?It seems to me that HC does not really take any position on even whether or not people have such an experience--that is a major difference, covered--it seems to me-- by Les' persistent reference to the importance of the phenomenon of normativity in Piaget's project. |
