It seems to me very doubtful that we have any explanations that are non-metaphorical. Isn't any explanation--which by its very nature must be manifested in some symbol system -- a way of using a symbol system as a metaphor for the target that is being explained? And doesn't our experience, eg, the replacement of Newtonian physics with quantum physics, teach that no matter how wonderful a job any of these metaphors do in explaining and predicting, we are wise to remember that they are metaphors, and likely to be replaced by others. I suggest that non-metaphorical is not the criterion you are really after. |
