I would like to share something that has happened to a number of my patient's that I think relates to the IQ cog dev discussion I have been following with great interest.?I am an SLP and had a post grad class in Piagetian Cog. Dev. in 1980 from Dr. Gary Moore at UCCS.?Since then I have used informal Piagetian assessments to guage the level of cog. maturity in the children with whom I work.?I then use dev appropriate cog tasks and embed my language goals within these tasks.?I no longer work on language in isolation.?I have worked with a number of children who have shown significant increases in their tested IQ (done by a psychologist) after this cog./language intervention.?One child gained 20 point (85 to 105) and another 19 (80 to 99).?Both kids began my treatment at ages 9 and 10 respectively after having seen other therapist's and having had alot of prior intervention.?I have many others too; same results.?What do you all make of this?? My guess is that the children most likely to be given IQ tests are those with some sort of learning/cognitive challenge.?I sometimes wonder if our IQ tests are really assessing these kids language, fine motor, motor planning, and visual processing (etc.) rather than their "IQ".?Comments.? Thanks so much for the info you all pass on.?I read all the comments and have learned a great deal from you all. |
