If math faculty don't believe that competence develops, then where do they believe it comes from??A maturational perspective suggests that either you've got "it" or you don't.?It follows from this perspective, also, that math isn't "learned."?You either grow into your innate ability, or you don't. If that's the common opinion, then we've got a lot more work to do than just presenting evidence of change following an intervention.?There's a whole epistemological framework missing that would allow such a presentation to make sense. That's not good news, although it does usefully explain the "proof and demonstration" method of teaching I received in my own math education.... |
