It simply means that the knowledge acquired through a specific piagetian mental structure is transposed to a superior mental structure, given the possibility for more advanced knowledge?.? For example, when an usual physical displacement in space and time can be elaborated mentally, I (or the representative child) eventually become able to think about this displacement in many ways , allowing me to foresse the order of a backward route for example, without having to experience it concretely.? And when this flexible (operational) mental representation of the displacement can be elaborated in terms of its relative subparts only (relations) or in relation with other possible displacement, the human mind (or the adolescent) becomes able to discover or appreciate more sophisticated knowledge (such as the law of geometry, etc....). Although this process can be conceived as a mechanism of intellectual growth, how exactly these transpositions are conducted during developement (or in our everyday adult life) remain unclear? |
