A comment only: I take Ian to be asking whether Michael's model provides/provided a logical and/or empirical answer to his question. But Michael's answer is by reference to different study [SOLO]. I want to make what I think is a simple point about psychological research on intellectual development on stages: it is rare - very rare - for two different studies to use the same model. The weaker version of this point is: the SOLO investigators can speak for themselves, but I would be reluctant to let them speak for anyone else about stages. The SOLO model is not an adequate answer to the question.
