Topic: Piaget for Math Graduate Teaching Assistants

Recently I did a math colloquium for a group of University of Oregon math graduate teaching assistants. These students are all working toward doctorates in math and met stringent entrance requirements.?

With one week of introduction to the UO, the Math Department, and teaching, they were deemed qualified to teach a course. Some of the courses are remedial and do not carry credit towards the degree, while others are freshman courses that do carry credit towards a degree. They receive some supervision during their first term of teaching

I had a focus on Scholarship of Math Teaching and Learning. I mentioned Piaget development scales, IQ, and math IQ in the discussion. It turned out that at least half claimed to have never heard of Piaget. (I got a similar response when I asked if any new of any theories or research about transfer of learning and teaching for transfer.)

My question to you Piagetian experts is:

Suppose that the equivalent of one hour of the week of preparation of these graduate assistants was to be devoted to learning some of the things that Piaget and his followers have taught us. What would you emphasize? What are your favorite (relatively short, in English, and available free online) references?

The free book that I mentioned in my recent email to you had errors on the Table of Contents page. These have been corrected.?The book is:

Moursund, D. and Sylwester, R. Editors (March 2013). Common Core State Standards for K-12 Education in America. Eugene, OR: Information Age Education. The book is available free.
