BOOK PROPOSALS ARE BEING INVITED FOR A NEW SERIES ON CHINESE EDUCATION

Education in China: Reform and Diversity

Announcing a new book series entitled Education in China: Reform and Diversity launched by Hong Kong University Press and the Wah Ching Centre of Research on Education in China. Proposals are now invited for this series.

The pace of change in Chinese education and society is unparalleled. Economic globalization, market forces, administrative decentralization, and information technology have extended the autonomy of social organizations, including educational institutions. At the same time, however, social dislocations, regional disparities and cultural diversity have become accentuated.

New challenges have developed at every level of the education system. Universities are growing at an unprecedented rate, however, the implications of expansion of enrollments, consolidation of institutions, privatization of higher education, and internationalization for university governance, equity, efficiency, and quality assurance remain puzzling. Basic education has become rapidly popularized nationwide, yet poverty and irrelevance remain obstacles in many rural regions, especially for girls from poor families and ethnic minorities living in remote regions. School curriculum has become more diversified, however, many teachers still lack skills to propel the reform forward. Vocational-technical forms of education, including community colleges, are moving in innovative directions, but there is a need for articulation with other parts of the system. An education system is developing in China that is based on new forms of organization and management, policy and planning, advocacy and activism. In the process, non-governmental forms of education are being encouraged. There has also been a marked increased in partnerships between domestic and international NGOs that is changing the landscape of social development and sustainable educational innovation.

The proposed book series will examine these and other educational problems, practices, policies and solutions, as well as their social implications. The series aims to expand and internationalize the discourse on educational reform and social diversity in order to highlight fresh perspectives and innovative research methodologies. Among the planned topics are: changing policies for private schools, social capital and school achievement, civic education in Shanghai, case studies of university globalization, Tibetan student identity formation, the education of migrant children, universities and WTO.

Proposals are welcomed on these and other topics. Proposal and enquiries can be addressed to chinaed@hkusua.hku.hk
