Dear Piagetians,
I would like to inform you that my dissertation, entitled "Analysis of Children's Websites from Piaget's Cognitive Development Theory Perspective: the Concrete Operational Stage", defended on Sept. 22nd, 2010.
It identified the characteristics of children's thinking in the stage of Concrete Operations in Piaget's Theory (i.e. conservation, classification, seriation (ordering), etc.). Such concepts made a framework to explore criteria, which can enable websites to prepare a context to facilitate/ enhance children's cognitive development. The data gathering tool designed according to Stufflebeam's (2000) "Checklist Development Checklist"*. By passing the accreditation and validation process, the created checklist applied to analyzing 41 children's websites (21 educational and 20 entertaining).
Findings reveal that children's websites which were studied in this research have not all the specifications for enhancing cognitive development in COS children. There was no significant difference in this regard between educational websites and those which were designed for entertainment. However, several English Websites were acknowledged as suitable for cognitive development. The ranking table which was designed by the researcher is an applicable tool for librarians, website designers, teachers and parents in order to develop and/or evaluate appropriate websites. The validated checklist is also a suitable tool for these groups of users for analyzing websites and selecting those which might be more useful.

The research conducted under the supervision of Professor Mehri Parirokh, to fulfill the degree of Master of Science in Library and Information Science at Ferdowsi University of Mashhad, Iran.
