At the recent JPS meeting in Park City, I had the opportunity to speak with many teachers of their department’s “history and systems?course.?To my surprise, some indicated that they were reluctant to attend the specialist meetings run by the Society for the History of Psychology (at APA) and Cheiron (the International Society for the History of the Behavioral Sciences).?Having now thought about it, and given that I heard this comment from a few different people, I am curious to find out why this is.? If we are doing something at the other societies to turn people off, then that’s something that needs to be addressed. I will try to continue to bring history to JPS.?(There has already been some talk about what to do at next year’s meeting in St. Louis.)?But so that I don’t end up organizing something no one wants to attend, could you please let me know what it is about SHP and Cheiron that are unappealing? Also, in April I asked about what it is that makes history useful (attached).?If that question relates in any way to this one, please feel free to tell me. If you want to send me a note privately, please email me at jtburman@yorku.ca |
